Tandag City, Surigao del Sur (30 January 2017). DENR Secretary Regina Paz L. Lopez called for the protection of environment and promote community-based ecotourism and social enterprise as major source of generating income and livelihood.
During her recent visit in Surigao del Sur State University – Cantilan campus, Secretary Lopez emphasized the need to protect the environment and natural resources where everybody can benefit out of the free environmental services.
“I wanna let you know that DENR is at your service. Just don’t destroy the environment,” Secretary Lopez stressed out as she talked to the municipal mayors, mining representatives, people’s organization, indigenous people, religious group, academe and other civil society organizations of Surigao del Sur.
The environment chief explained that a healthy and protected environment can be a source of sustainable livelihood. She presented some best practices of community-based eco-tourism who successfully managing the Ugong Rock, La Mesa Eco-park, mangrove and bamboo investments, which provide the people’s organization millions of income.
Believing that some poverty-stricken communities must know how to do marketing and value adding, Secretary Lopez vowed that the DENR will help communities doing social enterprise, connect with the rich, and promote eco-tourism on the condition that concerned communities together with the local government units and different stakeholders will help protect the environment and natural resources.
Secretary Lopez emphasized the social justice which is the heart and soul of DENR and where everyone benefits from the environment and natural resources. (JSN / PENRO-SDS).
